图形文件以像素形式在显示器上表现出来。那些细小的带有颜色的像素点混成一体,构成了彩色图像。就像字节长度影响到数字音频信号幅度范围一样,像素的比特数也会影响到图像色彩的数量。例如,一个4bt的图像文件只允许最多16种颜色,8bit的图像则可包括256种色彩,16bt的图像会有65536种色彩,24bit的图像包括1670万种色彩。图像显示的方法包括如下几类:
